Wood Roof Tiles

I created this material to replicate the roofing of an old Norwegian church called the Borgund Stave Church. The architecture on these 'stave churches' is quite unique and interesting which is what drew me to it.

One challenge in creating this material was to apply the wood grain to the tiles, but not to have it flow from one tile to the next (as this would not be realistic and would just look like a grain pattern overlayed onto a tile pattern). I did this by use of a custom pixel processor node in Substance, which uses a mask with different values between black and white for each tile, to slide the wood grain along by a certain amount. By having different values for each tile, the wood grain is moved a different amount for each tile, and hence the flow between tiles is broken, and each tile appears to have it's own grain flow.
